Ratios do not average
This is arithmetic, not a modeling convention: store the numerator and the denominator, never the ratio.
Worked examples, recomputed
Every number the mechanisms quote for this relationship is recomputed from it, so none of them disagrees with it.
- averaging margins: (50% + 10%) / 2 = 30%
- ratio of sums: 140 / 1,000 = 14%
- mean of means 55 ms; true mean 10.9 ms
Where it appears
Each mechanism states it in its own names. The general symbol each name stands for is shown with it.
